Colorado Minor Parties,

Once your candidates are nominated, our office is required by statute to make sure the candidates meet the qualifications for office. One of the qualifications is that the candidate be affiliated with the political party that they are representing as a candidate since the first business day of the election year or affiliated as long as the political party’s bylaws require. [1-4-1304(2)(b), C.R.S.]

Based on the bylaws that our office currently has for your parties, the affiliation requirement that we will apply for your candidates is the following:

  • American Constitution Party: candidates must be affiliated with party for 6 months prior to assembly (this requirement can be waived by vote of executive committee)
  • Approval Voting Party: no affiliation requirement listed in bylaws so Jan 2, 2020 date applies for candidate party affiliation
  • Libertarian Party: candidates must be affiliated with party for 150 days prior to the assembly
  • Unity Party: no affiliation requirement listed in bylaws so Jan 2, 2020 date applies for candidate party affiliation

If the candidate affiliation requirements above are incorrect for your party, please submit to me your current party bylaws with the corrected affiliation requirement.

Let me know if you have any questions.
